E-Cigarette Explosion Cause Devastating Injuries: Torn Flesh, Caustic Burns and Heat Burns
Wednesday, December 14, 2016

E-cigarettes use lithium ion batteries which, when they explode, release hydrofluoric acid that causes caustic chemical burns to the skin. These types of burns are particularly dangerous because the damage doesn’t show immediately and delayed treatment is less effective.

Acid Burn, Injury

If you suffer from a hydrofluoric acid burn (from a lithium battery) you should wash with water and a 2.5% calcium gluconate gel, if available. You must seek medical attention immediately because the chemical is absorbed into the skin and may result in tissue toxicity, severe pain, and calcium chemical changes that could cause a heart attack.

Thermal burns can also be devastating. There are three levels of burn, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree. Many victims of e-cigarette explosions suffer third degree burns, which is the most dangerous type of burn. Thermal burns can continue to burn the skin after the initial flame or burning object is removed.

If you suffer a thermal burn injury it’s important that you immediately soak the area with cool water to decrease the temperature. Do not use ice or butter because it may damage the skin.

In an e-cigarette explosion there may be plastic or metal parts burning the skin. You should run cold water over the pieces to decrease the temperature and retard burning. Cover the wound with a clean cloth to protect against infection and immediately seek medical attention.
