Western Michigan University has taken strides to live up to its title as one of the country's most environmentally responsible green colleges. One particular innovation is the number of electric vehicle charging stations that can be found on campus. WMU's charging stations make up a large part of Kalamazoo's 37 stations, which is more than a third of the stations found in West Michigan. Said Clean Energy Coalition Executive Director Sean Reed, "I can't point to anything else in Michigan that has a photovoltaic array and charging station on this scale. We want to get as much mileage out of this as possible and we want other universities to think about doing this." The charging stations are hooked up to a solar-panel array which WMU's Office of Sustainability tracks to find out the generation of individual panels. The funds were given to the university through the Clean Energy Coalition whose money also went towards the purchase of five Ford Transit Connect electric vehicles and a hybrid lift truck.
