Uganda

The Republic of Uganda is located in East-Central Africa in the African Great Lakes Region. The capital city is Kampala,  The country was originally ruled as a protectorate of Britain. The country gained its independence on October 9, 1962.  English and Swahili are the native languages, and Luganda, is a central language which also widely spoken in the country.

Uganda has suffered under decades of war and other unrest.  Uganda has seen the Second Congo War which took over 5 million lives as well as other regional conflicts. 

The country is one of the most corrupt in the world, as it ranks high in corruption on many lists, including Transparency International and the World Bank. The United States Department of State's 2012 Human Rights named Uganda as one of the most corrupt regions in the world.

Human rights issues are prominent, with abuse by the Ugandan Army and rebel Lord's Resistance Army being prominently reported in the country. In 2012, it was reported that nearly 40 percent of the population live in poverty, living off less than $1.25 (USD) daily. HIV and AIDS are also major problems in the country, with nearly 57 percent of the adult population living with HIV in Uganda.

The Supreme Court is the highest court in the country. It has 7 justices appointed, and hears appeals from lower court systems. Constitutional appeals are heard by a minimum of 7 judges, criminal appeals by 5 judges, and civil appeals by 5 judges.
