Kansas

Situated in the Midwest, Kansas’s Capital city is Topeka, and its largest city is Wichita. The state takes its name after the Native-American tribe which first inhabited the region. It is the 15th largest state by area, with a span of just over 82,000 sq.miles, and the 35th most populous state, with nearly 3 million residents. It is nicknamed “The Sunflower State.”

Today, Kansas is one of the most productive agricultural states in the US. It is one of the leading producers in wheat, corn, and soybeans. The Eastern portion of lies in the Corn Belt Region. Its economy also relies on manufacturing, transportation equipment, food processing, publishing, and chemical products. Aerospace is another major source of income in the state. Major corporations including Sprint, Garmin, and Koch Industries, are headquartered in Kansas.

Kansas is a Republican state throughout its history. The state government is broken down into the executive, legislative and judicial branch.  The Executive branch consists of five elected officials, with the governor and the lieutenant governor elected on the same ticket.  The legislative branch is bicameral, with a House of Representatives and a Senate.  A seven-member Kansas Supreme Court leads the judicial branch.  Vacancies on the bench are filled by a nominating commission, which selects three candidates and the governor chooses from the three.  The nominating commission is filled with Kansas lawyers, and four members selected by the governor.  Kansas is part of the Tenth Circuit Court.

Kansas is home to Kansas State, in Manhattan, Kansas, and the University of Kansas, in Lawrence, Kansas.  In fact, it is known as the Jayhawk State, as the team is always a top contender in the Sweet-16, March Madness NCAA Basketball Tournament.  Major law schools include the University of Kansas law school and Washburn Law School in Topeka, KS.

The National Law Review covers new and the latest cases coming out of Kansas, and the Tenth Circuit. Administrative agency news, business licensing, litigation, employment law, and cases dealing with Constitutional rights, are covered on the site.
