Mississippi

Bordering the Gulf of Mexico, Mississippi is a southern state, with a population of nearly 3 million residents, making it the 32nd most populous in the country. Jackson which is the state capital, is also the largest with approximately 175,000 residents, and lies in the middle of the state.  As a river-system state, Mississippi has several rivers including the Mississippi River, Big Black River, the Pearl River, Pascagoula River, Tombigbee and Yazoo River systems. The state is entirely comprised of lowlands, with the lowest point in the state being at sea-level at the Gulf-Coast.

The state ranks among the lowest in the country in terms of its health, education, and household incomes in the US.

Legalization of gambling on the Mississippi River and the Gulf Coast, has greatly impacted the state’s economy in recent years. Before Hurricane Katrina struck, it was the second largest gambling state in the US, after Nevada. In 2012, the state had the sixth largest gambling revenue, with $2.25 billion in profits. In recent years, political party strength in Mississippi belongs to the Republican Party, and the state contributes 6 electoral votes during Presidential Elections.

The Mississippi State Government is broken between an executive and legislative branch.

  • The executive branch features heads of state agencies, as well as the governor and the lieutenant governor, who are elected separately.  State officials are elected in odd number years.
  • The legislative branch is a House of Representatives and a Senate, with a maximum of 52 senators and 122 representatives.  Each has a four-year term, with no term limits.  The Lieutenant Governor presides over the Senate, and the House selects their own speaker.

The state’s court system consists of the Mississippi Supreme Court, with lower courts with a more limited geographic jurisdiction.
