FDA Issues Warning Letters to Website Operators
(November 19, 2009) The FDA completed a coordinated, weeklong, international effort to curb illegal actions by websites that appeared to be engaged in the illegal sale of unapproved or misbranded drugs to U.S. consumers. None of the websites were located in the U.S. or Canada. The effort culminated in the sending of 22 warning letters to website operators and their internet service providers and domain name registrars alerting them that the websites were selling products in violation of U.S. law. It is possible that the internet service providers and domain name registrars may terminate the websites as a result of the alleged illegal activity. This concerted effort to protect the public was an opportunity to enhance cooperation among international and domestic regulatory and law enforcement partners to effectively act against those involved in the manufacture and distribution of illegal medications.
