Emerson represents clients in matters involving environmental litigation and compliance counseling, including air and water quality regulation, hazardous waste handling and remediation, and contaminated site cleanups under the federal and state Superfund laws. Emerson also has experience in administrative litigation involving utility rate-making and regulatory approvals, including matters related to renewable energy, general rates, fuel supply and cost recovery, and resource planning. In addition, Emerson has handled matters involving Indian and tribal law, land use and real estate, and appellate advocacy.
Emerson previously worked as a legal intern at the Natural Resources Defense Council in Chicago and the National Wildlife Federation in Ann Arbor. Prior to law school, Emerson was a Staff Editor at The Atlantic magazine in Boston.
Emerson is a member of the American Bar Association and its Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources (SEER). He was selected to participate in the SEER Leadership Development Program for 2016-2017, and he also serves as an EPA Region 10 reporter for the SEER Air Quality Committee.
Emerson is a member of the Energy Bar Association, the Air and Waste Management Association, and the Northwest Environmental Business Council. He is also a member of the Washington State Bar Association Environmental and Land Use Law Section and the State Bar of Michigan Environmental Law Section.
