Varsha Bhattacharya

Varsha is a Leader in the International Tax Practice at Nishith Desai Associates. Her area of focus is cross-border taxation, including aspects of taxable nexus, withholding taxes, and domestic and international anti-abuse rules under Indian law and tax treaties. She is also a member of the private client practice at Nishith Desai Associates where she advises on estate planning and cross-border tax aspects relevant to individuals. 

Varsha has, over the past six years, advised clients from diverse sectors on cross-border transactions including M&A, group re-structuring, private equity entries and exits. She has also represented corporations and individuals in respect of their international tax disputes before courts and tax tribunals in India.

She has been involved with initiatives with the Government of India for reform of Indian tax policy, particularly for taxation of financial transactions and digital taxation. She also writes regularly on contemporary international tax issues.

Varsha completed her B.A., LL.B. (Hons) from the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata, and her LL.M. from Harvard Law School, and is qualified to practice law in India and in the State of New York, United States of America.
