The Iraq Monarchy was created in 1921, and overthrown in 1954 by the Iraq Republic. From 1968 to 2003, the  Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party controlled the government, when US invasion in 2003, removed Saddam Hussein from power. With the US presence ending in 2011, this gave rise to many insurgency groups, including ISIL.

The Federal Government of Iraq is defined as a democratic, federal parliamentary Islamic Republic, under the country’s Constitution. In addition to the federal, legislative, and executive branches, there are also several independent commissions which control the political system in the country.

Poor water and sanitation in the country is responsible for many illnesses in the country. The country’s water management system has greatly been destroyed due to decades of war and limited environmental awareness. The country also suffers from a deep housing crisis.
