Greg J. Penoyer

Professional Biography

Greg Penoyer is as Associate at Mintz' Boston office. He is a seasoned intellectual property counselor whose practice spans nearly all areas of intellectual property and is focused primarily on guiding clients through IP transactions, monetization, diligence, and litigation. In serving his clients, Greg leverages more than a decade of vast experience in all aspects of strategic development, management, and enforcement of intellectual property rights. In addition to working in private practice at other leading law firms, he has served as in-house counsel and trusted business advisor for several years at high technology companies in Austin, Texas and Boston, Massachusetts.

As in-house counsel, Greg was responsible for a wide and frequently shifting array of legal matters, including developing, protecting, and leveraging patent, trademark, and copyright portfolios; handling offensive and defensive disputes; and drafting and negotiating various technical and commercial agreements. Greg also has extensive experience driving more nuanced and cross-functional matters, such as developing corporate-level IP strategies including open source software risk management, business-friendly standard-essential patents mitigation strategies, copyright and branding issues, acquisition diligence, and sensible and commercially appropriate product freedom-to-operate assessment approaches.

This rich experience has armed Greg with a more holistic and thorough perspective of the value of intellectual property assets to an organization, as well as the challenges and opportunities that in-house lawyers face on a daily basis, in a way that is often difficult to anticipate and assist without such in-house experience. Greg brings this perspective in counseling his clients with practical, direct, and business-minded advice.

Prior to joining Mintz, Greg worked as Director and Associate General Counsel for Product, Technology & IP at SimpliSafe, Inc., and as Associate General Counsel for HID Global Corporation, an ASSA ABLOY company. Before his time in-house, Greg spent eight years working at two other leading Am Law 100 firms, where he counseled clients ranging from start-ups to multinational corporations on patent and trademark portfolio development, maintenance, and enforcement strategies. Before entering the legal profession, Greg worked in mechanical engineering at global power and aerospace companies, including Boeing, General Electric, and the United States Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.
