Senate Returns and Prepares for President’s State of Union

Senate Legislative Activity

The Senate will meet on Monday, January 11, at 2:o0pm. Following any Leader remarks, the Senate will be in a period of morning business until 5:00pm, with Senators permitted to speak up to 10 minutes each. At 5:00pm, the Senate will enter Executive Session to consider Executive Calendar #213, the nomination of Luis Restrepo to be U.S. Circuit Judge for the Third Circuit. There will be 30 minutes of debate, which will be equally divided between the parties, followed by a roll call vote on confirmation of the nomination.

On Tuesday, January 12, at 2:30pm the Senate will vote on a motion to invoke cloture on the motion to proceed to S.2232, Audit the Fed.

House Legislative Activity

On Monday, January 11, the House will meet at 12:00pm for morning hour and at 2:00pm for legislative business, with votes postponed until 6:30pm. The following legislation will be considered under suspension of the rules:

  1. S. 142 – Child Nicotine Poisoning Prevention Act of 2015;

  2. H.R. 757 – North Korea Sanctions Enforcement Act of 2016, as amended;

  3. H.R. 1777 – Presidential Allowance Modernization Act;

  4. H.R. 1069 – Presidential Library Donation Reform Act of 2016, as amended;

  5. S. 1629 – District of Columbia Courts, Public Defender Service, and Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency Act of 2015;

  6. S. 1115 – Grants Oversight and New Efficiency (GONE) Act;

  7. H.R. 598 – Taxpayers Right-To-Know Act, as amended;

  8. H.R. 653 – FOIA Act, as amended; and

  9. H.R. 3231 – Federal Intern Protection Act of 2015

On Tuesday, January 12, the House will meet at 10:00am for morning hour and at 12:00pm for legislative business. The House will consider H.R. 1644 – STREAM Act (Subject to a Rule). The House will then recess no later than 5:30pm and reconvene at approximately 8:35pm for a Joint Session of Congress to receive the President’s State of the Union Address.

On Wednesday, January 13, the House will meet at 9:00am for legislative business, with last votes expected no later than 3:00pm. The House will consider:

  1. H.R. 3662 – Iran Terror Finance Transparency Act (Subject to a Rule); and

  2. S.J. Res. 22 – Providing for congressional disapproval under chapter 8 of title 5, United States Code, of the rule submitted by the Corps of Engineers and the Environmental Protection Agency relating to the definition of “waters of the United States” under the Federal Water Pollution Control Act (Subject to a Rule)

On Thursday, January 14, and Friday, January 15, no votes are expected in the House.
