Iraq

Officially known as the Republic of Iraq, the country is located in Western Asia, and is bordered by Turkey, Kuwait, Jordan, and Syria. Baghdad is the country’s capital and largest city. The country has many ethnic groups living in it, with the Kurds and Arabs being the most prominent. A majority of the country’s nearly 39 million inhabitants are Muslim, which makes it the 36th most populous country in the world.

The Iraq Monarchy was created in 1921, and overthrown in 1954 by the Iraq Republic. From 1968 to 2003, the  Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party controlled the government, when US invasion in 2003, removed Saddam Hussein from power. With the US presence ending in 2011, this gave rise to many insurgency groups, including ISIL.

Iraq is a founding member of the UN, the Arab League, and is a member of IMF, the Non-Allied Movement, and OIC. The Federal Government of Iraq is defined as a democratic, federal parliamentary Islamic Republic, under the country’s Constitution. In addition to the federal, legislative, and executive branches, there are also several independent commissions which control the political system in the country.

The country’s economy is dominated by the oil-sector, which accounts for nearly 95% of the foreign exchange earnings. Iraq was one of OPEC’s founders. Poor water and sanitation in the country is responsible for many illnesses in the country. The country’s water management system has greatly been destroyed due to decades of war and limited environmental awareness. The country also suffers from a deep housing crisis. Education in the country is only mandatory through a 6th-grade.

The National Law Review covers stories and news which affect Iraq, its surrounding neighbors, the US, and other international states in the world. Foreign sanctions imposed by the US and other international governing bodies, travel bans and restrictions, immigration reform, and foreign workers and visa-programs for those who want to come to the US, are among the news topics which the National Law Review provides its readers. Up to date news and stories are added to the site routinely.
