Nicaragua

Nicaragua is the largest country in the Central American isthmus.  The capital, Managua, is the largest and most populous city. It’s the third largest country in Central America, with a multiethnic population of over six million inhabitants.

In 1978, there was a short civil war after opposition to government manipulation and corruption spread across the country.  After the short civil war, the Marxist Sandinista guerillas, and Daniel Ortega, came to power in 1979. Recent elections at all levels in the country have been marred by irregularities.

Nicaragua Government

Nicaragua is a democracy where the president is the head of the government and head of state.  The executive powers are held by the cabinet, the vice president and the president.  A simple majority election decides the president and the vice president, and they serve for five years with no term limits.  The president appoints the cabinet, who are they confirmed by the legislative body, the National Assembly.

The legislative branch of government is a unicameral National Assembly, consisting of 92 seats.

The Supreme Court in Managua, is the highest court in the judiciary of Nicaragua. The national assembly appoints the judges to this court, for a term of six years at a time. There’s a criminal, civil, constitutional, and administrative division in the Supreme Court, which is headed by 12 judges. There are both civilian and military courts in Nicaragua. Crimes by police or armed forces members are tried in military courts. Civilians are tried in the civilian/general court.

Topics revolving around Nicaragua, its people, and international relations, are covered on the National Law Review. Temporary protected status and immigration topics, patents, trademark registration cases, energy and environmental topics, and international affairs, are among the stories visitors can read online.
