The Nordic country of Norway is located in northern Europe, with its major core being comprised of the  Scandinavian Peninsula. The section of Antarctica, known as Queen Maud Land, also belongs to the country. Norway consists of a constitutional monarchy and considers itself a  unitary sovereign state. The parliament, Supreme Court, and other internal affairs are laid out in the 1814 Constitution.

Between 1537 to 1814 the country was part of Kingdom of Denmark-Norway. Today, the country maintains close ties with the United States and the European Union. It’s a member of NATO, the United Nations, Antarctic Treaty,  Council of Europe, WTO, OECD,  European Free Trade Association, and other international relations groups.

According to the world bank the country has the fourth largest per capita income in the world. With a value of over $1 trillion, it also has the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund. Since 2009, the country has the highest Human Development Index in the world, and one of the lowest crime rates in the world.

Norway is considered one of the most developed democracies in the world. The country is a  unitary constitutional monarchy and has a parliamentary government. The King of Norway serves as head of state and Prime Minister as the head of government. The power is vested in a three-party system, including the judiciary, executive, and legislative branches.

Laws in Norway are created and amended in Parliament, as the country follows a  civil law system. These laws are regulated under the Courts of justice of Norway. The Supreme court is the highest in the country, with 20 justices. The courts’ mission is to enforce the constitution, Norwegian judicial system, and to implement the legislation that is set forth by Parliament. Norway abolished the death penalty in 1902, and the country has a very successful criminal justice system with low prison rates and low recidivism.
