Mandatory GMO Labeling Quashed Under House Bill
Wednesday, September 16, 2015

In late July, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act. The controversial legislation, as passed by the House, creates a national voluntary standard for the labeling of foods with GMO ingredients. Opponents of the bill were hoping for mandatory labeling laws for foods that contain such items. According to Reuters, the "House passage marks a victory for food and agricultural companies that have lobbied for the bill, and a blow to opponents, which include consumer, health and environmental groups and organic food industry players." Supporters of the bill claim that mandatory labeling would burden the food industry with unwieldy and costly requirements, while opponents think it will keep consumers from knowing what is in their food and halt the FDA from developing a national GMO-labeling solution.
