Too Little Wind for Holland

After studying the wind, bat, and bird regimes in Overisel Township (Allegan County) for two years, the Holland Board of Public Works pulled the plug on its wind farm development at the site. Meanwhile, the Holland City Council has formed six task forces to develop the city’s 40-year energy plan. The task forces will look at: home energy retrofits; city-wide district heating; industrial full-service utility bundle (electricity, steam, compressed air); building energy labeling; electrical generation (coal, biomass, gas, renewable); and community education and outreach.  On August 8 the Sustainable Return on Investment report  prepared by the HDR consultant group was present to the Holland City Council and the Holland Board of Public Works in a public hearing.  The report generally favored new gas fired generation over coal fired generation, with a bow toward renewable and alternative energy generation.  Ultimately there will be a recommendation going to the Board and the City Council on a favored scenario for how the municipal utility will meet the future electrical demand of the community.
