Fraud & Abuse and the Medical Staff

Jessica Andrade, Shareholder and former Assistant U.S. Attorney will provide an update on fraud and abuse enforcement developments over the past year. Jessica will focus on how compliance and legal functions geared towards reducing fraud and abuse risk can overlap with Medical Staff functions, and the pain points that may arise from such interactions, including privilege concerns. Finally, the presentation will walk through relevant hypotheticals to provide a real-world context for the issues discussed, with practical advice for solutions. 

Medical Criminals: More Common Than You Think

Erin Muellenberg, JD, CPMSM, CPCS, Shareholder, Co-Chair Medical Staff Group, will discuss the growing incidence of medical criminals ranging from imposters to medical serial killers. Erin will include a review of Christopher Duntsch, known as Dr. Death, and the points in his short and infamous career as a neurosurgeon, when he could have been stopped and patient harm avoided. The participant will gain an understanding of the role of credentialing, privileging, and peer review in identifying imposters, criminals and simply bad doctors, to avoid or stop these individuals from working at your organization.
