Australia, which is officially known as the Commonwealth of Australia is comprised of the Australian mainland, Tasmania, and smaller surrounding islands. It’s the sixth-largest country in the world by area.

The area is comprised of six colonies and several smaller territories. The six states are: New Wales, Tasmania, Western Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, and Western Australia. The country has the 13th largest economy in the world, and is ranked 2nd in the Human Development Index. Australia is a member of NATO, G20, ANZUS, Commonwealth of Nations, Organization for Economic Co-operation and development (OECD), the WTO, and the Pacific Islands Forum.

Australia maintains a liberal-democratic political system functioning as a parliamentary under the monarch. Queen Elizabeth II serves as the Queen of Australia, and is represented in the country by a Governor-general. The government is split into the three branches (Judicial, executive, legislative), working alongside the House of Representatives and the Senate.

With a population of 25 million, the country is highly urbanized. Immigration is extremely high with nearly 26% of the total population in the country, coming from foreign countries. Foreign relations in the country are strongly driven under ANZUS pact with the US, and through ASEAN and the Pacific Islands Forum, in an effort to build relations with Asia and the Pacific. The country is a party to the Five Powers Defence Arrangements (Singapore, UK, New Zealand, and Malaysia); the country also has free trade relations with the US and agreements are being negotiated with China.

Australia is a wealthy country generating income from telecommunications, mining-exports, manufacturing, and banking. The  Australian Securities Exchange is the ninth largest exchange market in the world. In 2017, the Index of Economic Freedom ranked the country as the 12th largest economy in the world, and sixth highest per-capita GDP.
