Ireland

Located in the North Atlantic, Ireland is separated from Great Britain by the English Channel. The country has just over 6.6 million inhabitants, making it Europe’s Second-largest Island, after Great Britain. Approximately 4.8 million live in the Republic of Ireland, and the remaining population in Northern Ireland.

The Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921 gave Ireland its freedom from British Control. Complete independence in home-affairs, and foreign policy, was afforded to the country. The opt-out clause allowed the United Kingdom to retain control of Northern Ireland. The country is divided politically as the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Both share an open border and travel area between them. Both are members of the European Union.

The Republic is based on a Parliamentary-Democratic system, which is based on British models, and formalized in the country’s constitution. The Prime Minister, who is appointed by the President, is the head of the government. In terms of GDP per capita, the Republic of Ireland is one of the wealthiest countries in the world today. It was ranked as the world’s sixth most developed country in 2015, by the Human Development Index. In Northern Ireland, political power is held by the United Kingdom.

The Irish judicial system has five tiers of courts; including, the Supreme Court, the Court of Appeal, the High Court, the Circuit Court and the District Court.  The Irish constitution requires that justice be publically administered by an independent judiciary.

Tourism is one of the greatest economic draws to the Republic of Ireland; Dublin is the most heavily visited region in the country. The country has a rich history in arts, literature, music, sports, sciences, food/drink, throughout the world.

The National Law Review covers news, stories, and developments from the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, and its effect on citizens and neighboring countries.
