Kenya

Kenya is located in Africa; the largest and capital city is Nairobi.  Kenya is bordered by Tanzania, Uganda, Somalia, South Sudan, and Ethiopia. A majority of the country’s diverse regions including the East and West Tsavo National Park and  Aberdares National Park are protected by wildlife reserves.

Although it remained a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, Kenya gained independence in December 1963. The country has the largest economy in eastern and central Africa, as Nairobi serves as a major commercial hub in the region. Agriculture is the largest economic driver. Other industries including tea and coffee production, and tourism, also influence the country’s economy.

Kenya’s government and political structure follows a presidential representative democratic republic. The president serves as head of state and head of government, as well as the senate and national assembly.  The establishment of independent bodies like the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has helped curb corruption in the country and surrounding areas.

The Judiciary system in Kenya is governed by Superior courts including the Supreme court, appeals courts, an environmental and land court, and industrial courts. The Supreme Court is the highest court in the country, established under Article 163 of the Constitution.  Courts of appeal handle cases prescribed by Parliament, which are appeals from the High Court level.  This court consists of a president and twelve additional justices.  The high courts were established under Article 165 of the constitution of Kenya. In 2010, the Kenyan Parliament passed legislation to reform the Kenyan Judiciary, taking steps to remove justices who were unsuitable.
