iPresidential Debate Wi-Fi Blocking
FCC Commissioner Rosenworcel requested the Enforcement Bureau investigate alleged Wi-Fi blocking at the first Presidential debate hosted at Hofstra University. Reports have alleged that Wi-Fi blocking prevented spectators and journalists from using their own hotspots. Instead, they were required to pay a $200 fee to use the university’s Wi-Fi.
CTIA Enhancing Mobile 911 Location Services
The Cellular Telephone Industries Association (CTIA) announced in a press release last week that West’s Safety Services was selected to develop and operate a 911 National Emergency Address Database (NEAD) platform, which will serve as a national database of access points (e.g., Wi-Fi hotspots) and beacons (e.g., Bluetooth Low Energy) to assist 911 call centers in responding to emergencies.
Broadband Consumer Data Protection
Last week, the FCC released a fact sheet outlining a proposed Order for protecting the confidentiality and security of information that internet service providers (ISPs) acquire from customers. The FCC is expected to vote on the Order at its October 27 Open Meeting. The proposal follows a March 31 Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) that sought comment on a comprehensive set of privacy and security rules for protecting customer information, and reportedly incorporates revisions based on public comments and input from the Federal Trade Commission.
Charter Sues Louisville to Block One-Touch Make Ready
Charter joined AT&T by filing its own federal lawsuit to block Louisville’s approval of Google’s One-Touch Make Ready proposal. Like AT&T, Charter claims the Kentucky PSC has exclusive jurisdiction over pole attachments but also claims its constitutional rights are violated because Google must comply with fewer regulations.
911 Annual Reliability Certifications Due
The Annual 911 Reliability Certification deadline is quickly approaching for Covered 911 Service Providers (Vol. XIII, Issue 34). Certifications are due Saturday, October 15, 2016 but the Commission will accept certifications until the following Monday, October 17, 2016.
