Anthony Ashenhurst

Professional Biography

Tony is a member of the firm’s Healthcare Law Practice as well as the Employment & Labor Practice. He has practiced healthcare law for more than twenty years. His practice is focused on compliance issues, including: HIPAA, EMTALA, medical staff issues, and physician recruitment and contracting issues. Tony represents healthcare providers such as hospitals, health systems, physicians, and medical clinics.

Prior to joining Heyl Royster, Tony served as Assistant General Counsel in UnityPoint Health’s Law Department, where he provided advice on healthcare regulatory compliance and other corporate legal issues for UnityPoint Health’s Illinois affiliates. His practice included Stark Law and Anti-Kickback Statute counseling, HIPAA, EMTALA, and risk and claims management, including professional liability claims.

At UnityPoint Health, Tony was also responsible for physicians’ employment contracts for UnityPoint’s Illinois hospitals, as well as a range of other employment issues involving physicians and medical staff. He has also served as the UnityPoint Health – Methodist interim Compliance Officer.

Tony has practiced employment and labor law for more than thirty years. His experience in employment law includes defense of employment discrimination charges before the EEOC, the Illinois Department of Human Rights, and the Illinois Human Rights Commission, as well as employment law training for manufacturers (including the automobile industry), large retailers and educational institutions. Tony has extensive experience in employment issues in the health care industry. In the area of labor law, his experience includes union/management relations and negotiation of labor contracts on behalf of management. Tony began his career in the labor relations department of a steel manufacturer.
