Maureen F. Kwiecinski is of counsel with Foley & Lardner LLP, based in the firm’s Milwaukee office, where she is a member of the Health Care Industry Team. Maureen counsels health systems, hospitals, medical clinics, blood centers, organ procurement organizations (OPOs) and other health care providers on corporate governance, strategic transactions, and significant investigations and corrective actions; as well as general operational, compliance and regulatory matters. Following a successful career as a registered nurse and health care attorney, Maureen served as the Executive Vice President & General Counsel for Versiti, Inc., a large, complex health care organization that includes a federally-funded research organization, extensive hospital and health system relationships, physician’s clinics, multiple blood centers, and organ and tissue procurement organization, a pharmacy, an esoteric laboratory, and a philanthropic foundation.
At Versiti, Maureen developed an in-house legal service and compliance program while also creating and executing an aggressive multi-state growth and expansion strategy, completing three significant acquisition and integration transactions in four years. As the Chief Compliance Officer and Assistant Board Secretary, Maureen provided oversight for all legal and compliance matters and ensured that each Director and senior leadership team member had strong confidence in the legal and compliance functions of the organization.
Maureen relies depth and diversity of her training and experience to provide creative, practical and strategic guidance and problem-solving. In addition to her strong clinical background, Maureen has many years of experience providing senior executive oversight of organizational legal, quality and compliance programs, including strategic planning, execution of inter-state health care acquisitions, integrations and other transactions, simplifying and optimizing corporate governance structures, and managing all legal and regulatory compliance matters. She provides guidance on wide-ranging regulatory concerns including proper Board oversight of regulatory and compliance functions, federal grant compliance, research integrity and investigations, HIPAA, EMTALA, fraud and abuse, 340B Program compliance, medical staff matters, physician recruitment and contracting, telehealth, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and other health law issues.
In addition, Maureen has a Master’s Degree in Bioethics from the Medical College of Wisconsin and has served on multiple IRBs, ethics committees and quality boards. She enjoys assisting with the resolution of complex legal and ethical concerns and developing easily-implemented programs and policies.
