Denmark
Denmark is the southernmost Scandinavian nation, and is comprised the Faroe Islands and Greenland. Located in northern Europe, the country is comprised of the Jutland peninsula and 443 smaller islands, with Copenhagen being the largest island, and is known as the country’s commerce center. In 1397, the Kalmar Union ruled Denmark, Sweden and Norway, which ended in 1523 with Sweden’s secession; it wasn’t until 1814 when Denmark and Norway dissolved their union.
Absolute monarchy ended in the country on June 5, 1849 with the signing of its Constitution. A parliamentary democracy was established, with the government and parliament being seated in the largest city, Copenhagen. Denmark joined the European Union in 1973, maintaining certain opt-outs, including the right to hold its own currency. Denmark is also a founding NATO member, and is a member of the OECD, Nordic Council, and the United Nations.
Denmark is considered one of the most powerful economies in the world, with residents enjoying a high standard of living. Excellent healthcare, a strong educational system, and protection of civil liberties makes Denmark one of the top-ranking countries on the human development index. It is considered the fifth most developed country in the world, and is perceived to have the lowest level of corruption in the world.
The country’s political system is governed by the Constitution, which lays out a constitutional monarchy with a representative parliamentary system. The government operates as a cabinet government, with executive authority is exercised by the Prime Minister and other cabinet members. The civil law system is modeled after the Germanic legal system, and is similar to Norway and Sweden in that the country never developed case law (like US and UK) or a code system (similar to France or Germany).
Denmark’s economy is marked as a developed mixed economy, and is classified as high income. Based on GDP it is ranked as the 18th largest economy in the world, and 6th largest by nominal GDP. The country also has the fourth highest ratio of tertiary degree holders worldwide, making it one of the most educated countries in the world. Today, the economy thrives off the industrial industry, with pharmaceuticals, steel, iron, food processing, construction, and shipbuilding, being among the leading contributors to the economy.
