Taiwan

Taiwan, is a state in East Asia, and is officially known as the Republic of China (ROC). It’s the largest and most populous state in the world, that’s not a member of the United Nations.

Today, Taiwan is one of the major players in the technology sector, and is the 22nd-largest economy in the world. It ranks highly in public education, freedom of the press, healthcare, and human development.

The People's Republic of China (PRC) claims that ROC’s government is illegitimate. The ROC has its own constitution, holds elections, and has an independent armed forces branch from the PRC. Lack of wide diplomatic recognition around the world, causes confusion as to whether the ROC is an independent state, or defunct state, under international law.

Because the PRC refuses to engage in diplomatic relations with any nation that recognizes the ROC, only  16 UN member states and the Holy See maintain ties with the ROC. The US, however, remains one of Taiwan’s closest allies under the Taiwan Relations Act passed in 1979. The government is broken down into five branches including: executive, legislative, judicial, control, and examination Yuan. Commander in chief, and leader of the armed forces, is the president, who is voted in by popular vote.

The Judicial Yuan is the highest  judicial organ in the ROC. The highest court is the  Supreme Court, consisting of a number of civil and criminal divisions. Constitutional disputes are heard in the constitutional court, which was established in 1993. Although there’s no right to a  trial by jury, citizens are granted fair public trial rights, governed by law. Today, Capital punishment is still used in the ROC, although efforts to abolish it have been made.

The major conflict today is ROC’s relationship with the PRC. Another main conflict in the state is the establishment of National Communications Commission, to take over the Government Information Office. DPP administration officials corruption scandals, and issues amongst political party members, have also been recent conflicts in the state.

The National Law Review covers news, stories, content, and international affairs from Taiwan, the PRC, and its relations in Asia, and around the world. International relations, sanctions and the imposition of duties, and cases including money laundering and fraud, are some of the stories covered in relation to Taiwan on the National Law Review. International trade relations, visa and immigration policy, and other relevant stories are also covered frequently. Visitors will always find the latest content when visiting the site.
