Turkey

Turkey is a Eurasian country, with a large portion lying in Asia and a smaller portion on the Balkan Peninsula. The country is bordered by eight other countries and encircled by the  Aegean SeaMediterranean Sea, and  Black Sea to its north. Istanbul is the largest city and Turkey’s capital city.

Turkey is a member of NATO, the UN, World Bank, IMF, and an associate member of the EEC. It also joined the EU Customs Union in 1995. Turkish administration follows a unitary structure and is subdivided into 81 regions. A Presidential system of government was adopted in Turkey in 2017 and the 2018 election named a President with executive powers in the government. The office of the Prime Minister was also abolished as was the cabinet, giving the President control as head of state in the country.

Turkey’s government is a secular parliamentary representative democratic republic, and was established with the country’s current constitution adopted on November 7, 1982.  The country was founded in 1923, after the fall of the Ottoman Empire.  Under the current constitution, the Prime Minister is the head of the government and the President is the head of state.

The Judicial system is comprised of the Constitutional Court  which is charged with ruling on conformities of constitutional law and decrees. The  Council of State is the tribunal of last resort and hears administrative cases. The High Court of Appeals hears all other cases in the country. The President and  ruling party appoint judges to their seats in these court systems. The Constitutional Court also has the power to strip public financing of political parties in the country, if it deems they’re anti-secular or separatist parties.

The National Law Review covers a wide range of legal news and stories from the country of Turkey. Visa, immigration news, processing, travel bans, human rights issues, IP law, and trade laws, are among the topics covered on the site.
