Illinois

The state of Illinois was admitted as the 21st state on December 3, 1818. Although not its Capital City, Chicago is one of the leading cities in the US discussed in relation to political, enforcement, police brutality, and murder cases. Illinois is located in the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.

The Capital City of Illinois  is Springfield, and Illinois is nicknamed the “Prairie State”. The state bird is the Cardinal. The Purple Violet is the state flower and White Oak is the state tree. Its land area of about 58,000 sq. miles makes it the 25th largest state in the US. And, the population of approximately 12.8 million makes it the Fifth largest in the US. Chicago’s population of about 2.7 million, makes it the third most populous city in the US.

Chicago, and Illinois in general, was highly populated by immigrant workers in the early 1900s. Namely because of job-growth in textile, coal mining, industrial, and manufacturing jobs, the state became a hub for immigrants. Additionally, The Great Migration which swept through Chicago established a large community of African Americans, bringing famous jazz and blues music cultures to the city.

A number of US Presidents have been elected while living in Illinois. Most famously noted is Lincoln (where the Land of Lincoln logo is still seen on state license tags today). However, other Presidents including Ulysses S. Grant and Barack Obama were also residents when nominated into office. Hillary Clinton and Ronald Reagan were also born in Illinois. Two presidential libraries are in the state of Illinois as well.

Today, the state has a Democratic stronghold in elected offices. Although current governor and lieutenant governors are Republican (voted in 2015), the secretary of state, attorney general, comptroller, treasurer, and US Senators Class II and III, are all members of the Democratic Party. The state has voted Democratic in all elections to date, dating back to 1992. The state has a total of 18 congressional districts, with 11 delegates being Democratic and the other 7 members being part of the Republican party.

There are many prestigious law school located in Illinois, and in Chicago in particular.  For example, Northwestern Pritzker School of Law is located in the heart of downtown Chicago.  DePaul University College of Law  is located in Chicago's famous Loop,  The University of Illinois and Loyola Law School are are also located in Illinois.
