On July 23, 2020, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that it will lift its ban imposed on New York residents seeking to participate in the Trusted Traveler Program (TTP).

In February, DHS suspended the TTP for all New York residents in response to the Green Light Law, which New York enacted last year allowing its residents to obtain drivers’ licenses regardless of immigration status and limiting DHS’s access to the state DMV records. According to DHS, the revised law will allow U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to access those records “as necessary for an individual seeking acceptance into a trusted traveler program, or to facilitate vehicle imports and/or exports.”

“We appreciate the information-sharing to CBP for the trusted travel program,” said Acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf. DHS will resume processing New York residents under the TTP.
