India

India, officially known as the Republic of India, is located in Southeast Asia. By area it’s the seventh largest country in the world, and is the second most populous, with 1.2 billion residents. It is the world’s most populous democracy.

In 2017, the economy was the seventh largest in the world by nominal GDP, and had the world’s third largest purchasing power parity. India became one of the world’s fastest growing economies following the market-based economic reforms of 1991. Since this period the country has been considered a newly industrialized nation. It is considered a regional power and nuclear weapons state, and the country has the world’s second largest standing army. It ranks fifth in the world in military expenditures.

The country is based on a parliamentary system with 29 states and 7 union territories. As the world’s most populous democracy, the Indian government is a multi-party system, with 7-recognized national parties. Today, Congress and the  Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) share parliamentary control. The Constitution of India is the serves as the law of the land; the government abides by Constitutional checks and balances, and the Constitution claims India as a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic. The government is broken down into the legislature, judicial, and executive branches.

According to the  International Monetary Fund (IMF), in 2017 India’s economy was valued at US$2.454 trillion. Emphasis on trade, direct investments, and foreign markets, are among the leading drivers of the Indian economy. Major agricultural production of rice, wheat, cotton, and tea, are also prominently exported from the country. Telecommunications, chemicals, textiles, machinery and software, mining, steel transport, petroleum, food processing, biotechnology, and engineering goods, are among the many areas which the country relies upon, for its economic gains.
