Spain

The sovereign country of Spain is situated on the Iberian Peninsula. Spain is the second largest country in the European Union and fourth largest on the continent of Europe. Madrid is both the largest city and capital city in the country.

Spain is a member of many international organizations and has strong foreign relations ties with many countries around the world. It is a member of the European Union, United Nations, Council of Europe, Eurozone, NATO, and other organizations.

The EIU’s Democracy Index notes that Spain is one of only 19 countries in the world which is a full democracy. The Spanish Constitution of 1978 resulted from the transition to democracy. As a result of the Constitution, today Spain is comprised of 17 autonomous communities and two autonomous cities, and the Constitution states the country has no primary state religion and citizens are free to practice the religion of choice in the country. The Constitution also protects all citizens to exercise their human rights; and individual cultural and traditional beliefs.

The Spanish Constitution is the main source of law, and it is interpreted by the TheTribunal constitucional analyzes the constitution, and protects the rights of individuals as well as making sure both the legislative and executive branch act in a constitutional way.

The Spanish judiciary is governed by the Consejo General del Poder Judicial, comprised of 21 members chosen by Parliament.

Spain has one of the world’s greatest economies. Since being introduced into the Eurozone in 1999, many companies from Spain have gained multinational status. Spain is the second largest foreign investor in the world, only behind the US. Companies in technology, energy, petroleum, and renewable resources from Spain, thrive in regions around the world today. Tourism is also a major contributing industry to the country’s economy; in 2017, Spain was the second most visited country in the world, recording a total of 82 million visitors.
