Nevada

Nevada is the 7th most extensive state with a land area of over 110,500 sq.miles, and nearly 3 million population, making it the 34th most populous US state.  It is well-known and attracts visitors from all over the world for its 24-hour Casinos, the Grand Canyon, and other points of interest.  Nevada’s capital city is Carson, and most populous and heavily visited city is Las Vegas.

Nevada is well-known for being a liberal state. Although it was the least-populated state with approximately 110,000 residents in 1940, it was the first to legalize gambling, and is known for its liberal approach on same-sex marriage, divorce laws, and other legislation throughout the state. It is also the only US state where prostitution is legal. The state of Nevada is the fourth-largest gold producer in the world, however its tourism industry is by far the largest economic driver, followed by the mining sector.

Nevada State Government

Nevada’s state government is divided among the Executive, the Judicial and the Legislative.  The Executive branch consists of the state’s governor, and his or her cabinet, as well as other elected officers.  The Legislative branch contains the Nevada Legislature, including both houses: the State Assembly and the Senate.

The Judicial branch consists of the Supreme Court of Nevada, and lower courts.  District Courts, Justice Courts and Municipal Courts share original jurisdiction in the state.  The District courts have general jurisdiction, while Justice and Municipal have limited jurisdictions.  Appeals in the state go directly to the Nevada Supreme Court, which has discretion to send cases to the Nevada Court of Appeals to be decided.

Political party strength lies with the Republican Party, although it is a liberal state in terms of its legislation. In the previous three Presidential Elections, the state has voted for the Democratic candidate (Obama and Clinton). The state has 6 electoral votes which go towards the 270 in deciding for Federal Presidents during elections.

The National Law Review covers political stories, events, and news from the state of Nevada, as they relate to locals, neighboring states, and the US in general. Stories involving labor and workplace laws, same-sex marriage, legalized gambling, financial institutions, bankruptcy and tax law, and immigration, are among the different topics covered by the National Law Review. Visitors will find the most up to date coverage, and news from the state, and how it impacts the local and federal government systems.
